I setup the unused variable inside the json settings file but it doesn’t seem to behave like I think it should. Is there a specific theme that works well with this feature?

Hmm, it should work with any theme. When you press Ctrl + , and type “poweron.un” do you see that checked? If so, it should just start to work but you can also reload VS Code to reset everything.
Also, what theme are you on - I can double check that on my side too.
Also, these will appear dimmed only in the DEFINE section of your PowerOn.
